Florian was a peasant farmer in Austria. The family had a hereditary interest in the one and only water well of the town of Illmitz. This well at one time provided a financial income for the family.

In 1892, Stephen and his family immigrated to Zell, South Dakota, USA. Their port of landing was likely New York, which would have put them as some of the first immigrants to pass through historic Ellis Island. They continued by railway and slept in the cattle cars because Stephen had a job tending the cattle while on the trip west. In Zell, he joined with his brother Florian who had made the trip 5 years before. They homesteaded in Zell for 11 starving years. The land was unsuitable for farming so, in 1902, they moved to Canada and settled on a farm near Vibank, Sask.

When he was 18, Florian Sr. struck out on his own and started a homestead near Southey, Sask. He married his first wife, Adolphina and they had 2 children together. Unfortunately, Adolphina died 3 years later. In 1919, he married for the second time to Elizabeth (Shreuer) Bohn whose own husband John Bohn Sr. had just passed away a year before. Elizabeth brought her three young children with her into the marriage. They went on to have 7 more children together to make an even dozen.

Michael Yandel was born and raised on the Yandel farm near Southey. In 1956 he obtained his medical degree from the College of Medicine in Toronto, Ontario then interned for two years at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto. In 1958, he set up a general practice in Humboldt, Sask. Then, from 1964 to 1970 he did his post-graduate training in Orthopedic Surgery at the University Hospital in Saskatoon. In 1970, he began a private Orthopedic Surgical Practice in Kelowna, BC. He married Elinor Baker one day following graduation from medical school. Elinor was an avid photographer, active in the arts community and spent time as director of the Kelowna Art Gallery. Together they had five daughters and one son.
