Abner Miles, who also spelled his name Mi(g)hells, may have been of German origin but was born in Massachusetts and moved to York in 1794 (a United Empire Loyalist). He was one of the first settlers in the area. He ran a tavern and store that supplied the town with meat, butter and eggs. This business eventually passed to his son-in-law James Playter, and his brother Ely. Abner acquired many properties and moved a mile north of his farm in 1802 to open a hotel and potash business. This location was variously known as Mile’s Hill and Mount Pleasant until around 1819 it was renamed Richmond Hill. He died suddenly while trying to remove a pine stump, leaving more than 2000 acres of land to his only son James, who in turn would pass it on to his older sisters Lucy, Hannah and Elizabeth. His wife Mercy lived to the remarkable age of 97.

John Langstaff (Sr) was a fifth-generation American. His ancestors had left south-central England to settle in New Hampshire in the seventeenth century. He had come to Upper Canada by horseback from Amboy, New Jersey. Legend has it that he went back to New Jersey for a year or so but returned again to marry Lucy Miles. Local schools commemorate him as the region’s first teacher, but he left teaching to serve in the York Militia during the War of 1812. John and Lucy raised 8 children: 4 girls and 4 boys.

James Miles Langstaff became a prominent doctor in and around the town of Richmond Hill. His first wife was Mary Ann Miller. Her grandfather, Nicholas Miller, born in Germany in 1760, was the first Caucasion settler in this area of Upper Canada. He had a log home on what is now Yonge street. His parcel of land was hand-cleared with the help of the troops under Governor John Graves Simcoe.
James and Mary Ann had 10 (11?) children, most of whom died in the first few years. See the Miller Family Tree.

(96) Frederick Langstaff moved out from Ontario with his brother Lewis (Jr) (95). They each bought farmland near Yorkton, (Rhein) Sask. Later, around 1929, Lewis died and left his land to all his siblings. Frederick wanted the land and mortgaged his land to buy out the other brothers and sisters. Just after this, the depression hit and he lost everything to the bank. He kept some of the livestock for a short time and rented land outside of town to keep them. He lived out his days in a small, two-room house in Yorkton.
(97) Margaret Dixon was part of the Dixon family from Peterborough, Ont. Her parents died in the flu epidemic. Her brothers John and Chester moved out west from Peterborough in 1883. They became prominent ranchers and businessmen in Maple Creek, Sask.

Hank Langstaff graduated from school just as the Great Depression started. As the family farm was lost, there was little choice but to travel to find work. He ended up in Northern Ontario where he was able to work briefly in a gold mine (not to his liking). He then found work in lumber camps. Eventually, he teamed up with Lorne Mckenna and built a series of log cabins that they were able to rent out to the miners. When World War 2 broke out, he enlisted in the Air force and was stationed in England. Here he met Joyce Ward, a Wireless Operator in the British Women’s Air Force (WAF).
They were married in England soon after the war in 1946. Not long after the birth of their first child, Christine, they moved to Canada and first settled in Yorkton, where they had their second child, Gary. In 1957, the family moved to Calgary, where their third child, Karen, was born.
Hank started his own electronics business which supported the family until he and Joyce were able to retire to their cabin on Shuswap Lake, BC.
