William Whiteley was a mill worker in Yorkshire. When he attempted to organize a union, he was blacklisted and prevented from getting any more jobs. In 1902, he moved his family to Northampton so that he could find work. At the time, Northampton was known for having a thriving leather trade with several large shoe factories.
Jack and Norman both served in the First World War as stretcher bearers.
